Welcome to Shepherd Historic Neighborhood

Homes within Shepherd Neighborhood

Oklahoma City’s Shepherd Neighborhood contains 309 homes in a well maintained, community setting with many large old trees.  Almost all the homes are one and two story brick veneer houses built in the late 1930’s.

About half of the neighborhood houses are “Tudor Revival” or English style.  These houses feature steeply pitched roofs, arches, half-timbered gables, and prominent chimneys.

Simplified “Colonial Revivial” style houses are also found within the Shepherd Neighborhood.  These homes typically have round columns, balconies, and subtle porch details.

Only two houses have been built in this area since World War II and nearly all the homes have retained their original styling.  This gives the Shepherd Neighborhood a distinct charm and makes it one of the more appealing places to live in Oklahoma City.

The Neighborhood and Surrounding Areas

Maintaining a sense of community is important to Shepherd Neighborhood residents.  In fact, they established Oklahoma City’s first community watch program and have an active neighborhood association.  As a result, this area has one of the lowest crime rates in the city.

The Shepherd Neighborhood is also home to Swatek Park – a recreational area that features a baseball diamond, swings, slides, and other playground equipment.

Just south of the neighborhood is NW 23rd Street, a major thoroughfare lined with a variety of shops and businesses.  In the near future this area will undergo a major refurbishing including new streetlights and landscaping.

Oklahoma City University, a quarter mile east of Shepherd Neighborhood, offers a variety of cultural and sports events that are open to the public.  The university also offers community non-credit classes, as well as undergraduate and graduate degree programs in music, law, business, and international studies.

St. Anthony Hospital is only two miles southeast of Shepherd Neighborhood, and Baptist Medical Center and the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are also within a few miles.

And if you need to come Downtown for work, business or public events, the Downtown Business District is only a few minutes away.
